Ten years ago, an Indian woman sold me this blanket, explaining that it was sewn together from fabrics that had adorned gods and goddesses. In India, it is the custom to care for statues as for your child, getting dressed, washed and redressed, then carried around the village, blessed and being blessed by it. The fabric eventually rips and disintegrates. Yet, some parts are still whole and as in Western culture, a patchwork quilt is made from these sacred remnants, which have been created with caring and skilled hands from the most precious material the village could afford. I felt obliged and honored to continue the tradition of mending broken threads. Old Indian tradition deserves some care.
